I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful week in California last month while attending the Artist Holiday workshop at Sunstone Villa and Winery.  It was so refreshing to be among so many great artists and industry titans, and I relished watching their creative processes as they designed amazing inspirational sessions that photographed like a dream.

Having transitioned into the role of Portland wedding photographer, I enjoyed basking in the glow of the famed California sunlight so much (something I yearn for, living in the Pacific Northwest!) and producing sun-soaked images without even a hint of clouds or rain!  I featured those sun-filled images in another blog post, which you can see by clicking here, I’m thrilled to be sharing a peek at some of the portraits I captured indoors during my time at the villa.

Sunstone Villa has such a unique quality, and it was a magical venue in which to work.  The history behind it is incredible!  It’s founders constructed the villa from artifacts and materials recovered from a small village in France and imported to the US, so when you step inside, it almost feels as though you’ve been transported back in time or to another continent.  It made me so nostalgic for the years I lived abroad in Europe!

The Artist Holiday couldn’t have come at a better/worse time for me, personally speaking. I don’t often share details of my personal life online, so only close friends know what a difficult year 2015 has been for my husband and me.  Just when I thought we had reached our maximum capacity for difficulties, November came at us (with a bang!).  When both of my computers’ hard drives crashed within 24 hours of each other and had to be wiped out and rebuilt, the Apple Care engineer made a joke about bad things happening in threes, but my husband and I figure we capped it right around eight. He was thrown from a horse and ended up in the ER, I crashed our car, we decided to make a huge life change, our much prayed and hoped for, much anticipated little baby that we tried to conceive for three years died in the womb at 10 weeks, and I had to have a surgical procedure to remove it.  A few days later, I flew to California for The Artist Holiday in what felt like a daze.

I am so grateful for this week in California like felt like a huge breath of fresh air, and I’m savoring all of the beauty I had the opportunity to capture.

I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful week in California last month while attending the Artist Holiday workshop at Sunstone Villa and Winery.  It was so refreshing to be among so many great artists and industry titans, and I relished watching their creative processes as they designed amazing inspirational sessions that photographed like a dream – and what a dream this inspirational session was with Christian and Leah!

As an undergrad, while earning my degree in Fine Art Photography, I shot almost exclusively with black and white film.  I spent hundreds of hours in the dark room developing my film, processing it just so, and creating beautiful prints full of character and emotion.  It’s that emotion that drew me to black and white film in the beginning, so evocative, dramatic, and forgiving.  I haven’t shot much black and white film in the years since I graduated, and, in fact, fell head over heels in love with color film instead and have been shooting with it almost exclusively for the past year and a half.  So, it was so almost like a homecoming coming back to black and white for this session with Christian and Leah.  Once again, I’m hooked!  Such feeling, and so evocative!
